Veep orders IGP to hunt for 'missing' cocaine suspects
IGP Paul Quaye

The Vice President of Ghana, John Mahama, has directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Paul Tawiah Quaye to as a matter of urgency set up a team to thoroughly investigate how substances confirmed to be cocaine could have turned into sodium carbonate (commonly known as washing soda).

According to the Vice President, the country has done tremendously well in its fight against narcotics in the past few years and would not allow any person or group of persons to draw the country backward in this fight.

Mr. Mahama said, “this government has done a lot to redeem the image of the country as a narcotic transit point and we are not going to let anything roll that image back to what it was before and so there is going to be very thorough investigation of this matter and anybody found to be culpable must be very severely dealt with. ”

“Not only in terms of those who substituted whatever substance it was but anybody whose negligence led to that incident happening. IGP, you must launch an immediate investigation and deal very severely with anybody who is found to have been culpable,” he added.

The Vice President made these comments during a presentation of a number of vehicles to the Ghana Police Service on Wednesday to aid them in the execution of their duties especially during the Yuletide and beyond.

Meanwhile, the executive secretary of the Narcotic Control Board has called for the interdiction of junior police officers and their supervisors whose negligence may have resulted in the disappearance of cocaine exhibits being used to prosecute an alleged drug trafficker.

Mr. Akrasi Sarpong who is suspicious the initial cocaine substance may have been exchanged with the washing soda told Citi News that the officers who handled the case must be investigated and punished appropriately.
